Blocked drains – Causes and Prevention Shared in Easy Steps

Blocked drains popularly known as clogged drains are the smallest but most annoying issues that are faced by most people across the world. Such issues start with small problems and later they are accelerated into much bigger issues and costly repairs. Therefore, it is important to address the problem as soon as it occurs. But more than resolving these issues it is important to prevent them as it is said prevention is better than cure and to cure the problem it is important to understand the root causes that create them in the first place.

The main causes of Blocked Drains:

  1. Hair: It may seem like a simple thing, but hair is the major culprit of clogging the drains.

  2. Soap:  Many of us don’t know but soaps can cause severe blocking in pipes because they contain grease and fat or hard residue that can block the pipes if collected.

  3. Dirt: You may think that pipes are closed so dirt might not block them but washing clothes releases dirt that can block the drains.

  4. Food waste: Kitchen sinks are always blocked because of the food grains that are pushed from the drains and pipes like tea leaves, coffee, or oil.

  5. Mineral buildup: If you live in an area where you get hard water then you must know that the minerals dissolved in the hard water can cause the blocks that can be difficult to remove.

  6. Small objects: Sometimes small objects can find their way to the pipe and drainage systems kid’s toys pins etc.

  7. Toilet paper: If you flush toilet paper it may soon stop the toilets from flushing and create havoc.

  8. Tree roots: If your pipes have cracks and holes tree roots can make their way to them and get the pipes blocked.

What happens when the drains are blocked?

Blocked drains can create a situation that is annoying and unhealthy, here is what really happens:

  1. In the start, you may hear some weird sounds with bubbling

  2. Later the flow of water is slowed down.

  3. Finally, it is stopped fully causing the flood of dirty filthy water in the house.

  4. The foul odor of the blocked drains is just unbearable.

  5. When the toilet is blocked you can’t flush and everyone knows the filth that is created.

How to prevent Blocked Drains?

Now you know the reasons and results of the blocked drain, but the question is how to prevent the drains from getting blocked.

Here are simple ways of preventing clogging:

  1. Use guards at the entrance of the drains to stop the hair from flowing into it and keep it clean.

  2. Use soft and mild soaps to prevent the Greece from getting collected and often flush the warm water in the drains to clean the drains

  3. Dust your clothes before washing them and prevent the dirt and debris from going into the pipe by using thin netted guars.

  4. Don’t let the food get collected in the pipe use strainers for tea and coffee and throw the food waste in the dustbin, not in the sink.

  5. Minerals in the water can be reduced by using the water softening methods.

  6. Always be careful to dispose of small objects like toys, plastics, and other materials in the dustbin, and keep an eye on your kids and pets to avoid any mess.

  7. Never flush the toilet paper use dustbins to dispose of it.

  8. Keep your piping system well maintained and get it checked, replaced, or repaired from time to time as the need be.

If your drain is showing signs of clogging clear it immediately but if the situation is out of control don’t try any DIY project and immediately call the plumber to get the issue resolved. Regular clean-ups can help prevent causing such blockages.
